Best duplicate photo finder for Google Photos (2026)

Updated July 2026 · PhotoDeduper

Most "best duplicate photo finder" lists are outdated: they recommend desktop apps that can no longer connect to Google Photos at all. Google removed third-party API access to Photos libraries on March 31, 2025 — since then, only tools working inside your own browser session can see your library. Here is the honest 2026 landscape. (We build PhotoDeduper, one of the options below; the constraints described apply to every tool equally.)

The comparison

ApproachWorks in 2026?Near-duplicates?In place?Effort
Browser extension (PhotoDeduper) Yes Yes — perceptual matching with adjustable strictness Yes — cleans directly in photos.google.com Minutes to set up; scan runs on-device
Manual cleanup Yes Only what your eyes catch Yes Hours for large libraries
Desktop apps (Duplicate Photo Cleaner, Duplicate Photos Fixer, …) Not with Google Photos directly — API access removed March 2025 Yes, on local files No — needs full export first Days: Takeout export → dedupe → re-upload
Open-source self-hosted tools (API-based) Broken — built on the removed Library API
Google Photos built-in No duplicate finder exists No

Why desktop duplicate finders dropped out

Until 2025, apps could ask for read access to your Google Photos library through the official API. Google removed those API scopes on March 31, 2025. Desktop tools didn't get worse — the door they used was closed. They remain fine tools for local files: if you're doing the Takeout round-trip, one of them handles the local dedupe step. But "connect to Google Photos and clean it" is no longer a thing any installed app can do. The same shutdown broke the open-source self-hosted dedupers that relied on the API.

What to look for in a browser-based finder

That list is also PhotoDeduper's design spec — which is the honest way to say: we built the thing we'd want. Why Google doesn't ship this itself →
